Wiping mold off our windows is one of the most universally hated chores! Not only is it hard work, but it can also get pretty messy without the right equipment. Still, allowing mold to grow inside your house can cause severe health issues, including respiratory problems such as asthma and even allergic reactions.
Since mold is a pretty common problem, we’ve decided it’s time to share our knowledge on how to get rid of it and how to keep it away!
Getting Rid of Mold Is a Step-by-Step Process
Mold is a stubborn type of fungus. With that in mind, simply wiping off the mold from the infested area won’t fix the problem. In fact, it’s only the first step in the process. But before we get to the cleaning part, you will need to take a few precautions first:
- Remember to wear rubber gloves when dealing with mold.
- Wear a face mask and protective goggles while cleaning.
Step #1: Preparation
Before you grab your wash-cloth, you will need to prepare the solution you’ll be using. Don’t worry, it’s nothing fancy, but it gets the job done!
You will need:
- some soap or dishwashing detergent
- a spray bottle
Pour the water and soap into the spray bottle and give it a good shake.
Step #2: Wipe Down the Mold-Infested Areas
Going forward, you have two options:
- You can use some paper towels to get rid of the first layer of mold before using the soap and water solution
- You can immediately use the solution
We recommend going in with a few dry paper towels first to get rid of that top layer. Ultimately, it’s the cleaner option.
After that, spray some solution onto the window. Carefully wipe down the entire area using a washcloth or sponge. We recommend using an old toothbrush to get into those difficult-to-reach crevices.
Step #3: Get Rid of The Microscopic Mold
Now it’s time to move on to getting rid of those microscopic mold spores (trust us, they’re still hanging on there!).
Dealing with them is a bit more complicated, so you will need to mix one part chlorine with four parts water. Using a spray bottle, apply the solution onto your windowsill, and let it soak for approximately 15 minutes.
Afterward, wash it off with some clean water.
Step #4: Make Sure to Dry the Window
Once you’ve cleaned everything, we recommend using a hairdryer or fan to dry the windowsill. That way, you will ensure that the area is dry and keep the mold away for a while. Remember to take special care to dry each corner.
The Best Way to Get Rid of Mold for Good
Ultimately, if you live in a damp area where it tends to rain a lot, you’re going to deal with mold several times throughout the year. Although our tips will help you get rid of the infestation, you won’t be rid of the mold for good.
For lasting removal, you will need to hire a professional service.
