What About Mold Removal From Clothes?

mold on concreteWe talk about mold removal a lot.

It’s our thing so you can’t blame us.

We usually focus on areas of your house where you most likely need mold removal, but what if you have mold on your clothes or fabrics in your home?

Don’t worry; we have you covered there, too.

Mold on Fabrics and Clothes

Mold is not biased at all when it comes to what surface it decides to grow on. If the conditions are right and the mold can feed off that particular surface, it has no problems setting up shop.

There are a few conditions needed for mold to grow and on your clothes is no exception.

Mold thrives in damp, humid environments. If you store your clothes or any other fabrics (like rugs or drapes) in areas where you have these conditions, there’s a chance mold will grow on those items as well.

Mold feeds on a substance called cellulose, and this is a primary component in the makeup of items such as cotton.

This means your clothes and other fabrics have a high chance of being a mold hotspot if they aren’t stored properly.

Mold Removal from Clothes

Let’s say you didn’t know any of this.

(It’s OK. We won’t judge you.)

You have mold on your clothes, and you’re freaking out because everything you’ve heard about mold is screaming that you need a professional to remove it. Before you know it, you’re in tears as you shove your wedding dress into a garbage bag and you’re convinced all hope is lost.

Slow down there, partner.

You can remove mold from clothes. And you don’t need a professional to do it.

In fact, the products that will work best are probably in your kitchen right now.

A mixture of white vinegar and baking soda mixed in a spray bottle is one of the best agents you have in mold removal (be it on your clothes or small patches on other items.)

If you spray the solution on the mold and let it sit for a while, the vinegar will begin to eat away at the mold. Then, you can just start to wipe it away.

You’re not done yet, though.

After you wipe or scrub the mold away, make sure you rinse it again in warm water. Once you have rinsed it, spray the solution on the area one more time to be safe and let it dry.

Can I Wash the Mold Off My Clothes in the Washing Machine?

You can.

Hot water is a great mold removal tool. Anything hotter than 140 degrees Fahrenheit will kill most molds. That’s a significant first step.

Unfortunately, while that may get rid of the mold, it isn’t necessarily going to get rid of the mold smell. (You do not want to be the person who gets the nickname Moldy – that’s the name of our mascot. There’s no way that can turn out OK for you in any circumstance.)

To get rid of the smell of mold in the washing machine, you need the aid of some regular laundry soap and some baking soda. Just about a half a tablespoon of baking soda tossed in your washing machine along with the usual amount of laundry detergent should do the trick.

And now you know why your mom always had a box of baking soda sitting in the cupboard somewhere.
